How

1. Through Scripture

2. Though Inner Desire

  • For it is [not your strength, but it is] God who is effectively at work in you, both to willa and to work [that is, strengthening, energizing, and creating in you the longing and the ability to fulfill your purpose] for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:13 AMP

aHe gives us the desire and strengthens us to do His will. In other words, when you are in tune with God, you automatically do His will even without consciously knowing. See below

  • So Ruth went and picked up the leftover grain in a field after the reapers; and she happened to stop at the plot of land belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech. Ruth 2:3 AMP

3. Through Prompts

  • whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear1 this command2 behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.” Isaiah 30:21 BSB
  • I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye. Psalm 32:8 NKJV
A word of caution: Not all prompts are of God; they could be from self or the devil. And any prompt that is contrary to the word of God is not from God.

Other Guidance Promoses

  • this is God, our God forever and ever. He will guide us foreverPsalm 48:18 ESV
  • He guides me in the paths of righteousness for the sake of His name. Psalm 23:3 BSB
  • all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons and daughters of God. Romans 8:14 NASB
  • He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Psalm 23:3 AMP

Next Steps after obedience to first steps

  • Therefore, our livestock too shall go with us; not a hoof shall be left behind, for we shall take some of them to serve the LORD our God. And until we arrive there, we ourselves do not know with what we shall serve the LORD.” Exodus 10:26 NASB
  • Fill your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse of Bethlehem, for I have selected from his sonsa a king for Myself.” 1 Samuel 16:1 BSB

aSamuel was not told beforehand which of Jesse’s sons God had chosen. When Samuel did what he was told, it was revealed to him. See

  • So Jesse sent for his youngest son and brought him in. He was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him, for he is the one.” 1 Samuel 16:12 BSB

Guidance can be very specific

  • So He sent two of His disciples and told them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jug of water will meet you. Follow him, and whichever house he enters, say to the owner, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is My guest room, where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?’ And he will show you a large upper room, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.” So the disciples left and went into the city, where they found everything as Jesus had described. And they prepared the Passover. Mark 14:13-16 BSB
  • Now it came to pass the same night that the LORD said to him, “Take your father’s young bull, the second bull of seven years old, and tear down the altar of Baal that your father has, and cut down the wooden image that is beside it Numbers 16:25 NKJV
  • When you depart from me today, you will meet two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now your father has ceased to care about the donkeys and is anxious about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?”’ Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the oak of Tabor. Three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand. After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you. Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming down to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.” When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day1 Samuel 10:2-9 ESV
