Key Verse
- “No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon [money, possessions, fame, status, or whatever is valued more than the Lord]. Matthew 6:24 AMP
Insights
1. Diligence
- Be diligent to know the condition of your flocks, And pay attention to your herds; For riches are not forever, Nor does a crown endure to all generations. When the grass is gone, the new growth is seen, And herbs of the mountain are gathered in, The lambs will supply wool for your clothing, And the goats will bring the price of a field. Proverbs 27:23-26 AMP
2. Invest
Wise
- “So he who had received five talents came and brought five other talents, saying, ‘Lord, you delivered to me five talents; look, I have gained five more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ Matthew 25:20-21 NKJV
Unwise
- So you ought to have deposited my money with the bankers, and at my coming I would have received back my own with interest… And cast the unprofitable servant into the outer darkness. There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ Matthew 25:27, 30 NKJV
This is not just about money but about whatever skills/talents we have.
3. Stewardship
Desirable
- However, no accounting shall be required of them for the money placed in their hands, because they act faithfully.” 2 Kings 22:7 NKJV
Undesirable
- Now he said this, not because he cared about the poor [for he had never cared about them], but because he was a thief; and since he had the money box [serving as treasurer for the twelve disciples], he used to pilfer what was put into it. John 12:6 AMP
Pilfer = “to steal stealthily in small amounts and often again and again” Merriam-Webster
4. Other uses for Money
- And I tell you [learn from this], make friends for yourselves [for eternity] by means of the wealth of unrighteousness [that is, use material resources as a way to further the work of God], so that when it runs out, they will welcome you into the eternal dwellings. Luke 16:9 AMP
Prayer
- Keep deception and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is my portion, So that I will not be full and deny You and say, “Who is the Lord?” Or that I will not be poor and steal, And so profane the name of my God. Proverbs 30:8-9 AMP
