Other versions

  • Train up a child in the way he should go [teaching him to seek God’s wisdom and will for his abilities and talents], Even when he is old he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 AMP

How?

1. With Discipline

  • He who withholds the rod [of discipline] hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines and trains him diligently and appropriately [with wisdom and love]. Proverbs 13:24 AMP
  • Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be party to his death. Proverbs 19:18 BSB

See example

  • Eli’s sons: Now I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the sinful behavior which he knew [was happening], because his sons were bringing a curse on themselves [dishonoring and blaspheming God] and he did not rebuke them. 1 Samuel 3:13 AMP

2. Without causing exasperation

  • Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger [do not exasperate them to the point of resentment with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by showing favoritism or indifference to any of them], but bring them up [tenderly, with lovingkindness] in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. Ephesians 6:4 AMP
  • Fathers, do not provoke or irritate or exasperate your children [with demands that are trivial or unreasonable or humiliating or abusive; nor by favoritism or indifference; treat them tenderly with lovingkindness], so they will not lose heart and become discouraged or unmotivated [with their spirits broken]. Colossians 3:21 AMP

3. Teach by doing

  • For I have known (chosen, acknowledged) him [as My own], so that he may teach and command his children and [the sons of] his household after him to keep the way of the LORD by doing what is righteous and just, so that the LORD may bring upon Abraham what He has promised him.” Genesis 18:19 AMP
Other versions

  • For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him. Genesis 18:19 KJV

4. Reveal what GOD has done for you to your children

  • We will not hide them from their children, But [we will] tell to the generation to come the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, And [tell of] His great might and power and the wonderful works that He has done. Psalm 78:4 AMP

Set Godly Example

  • Grandchildren are the crown of aged men, And the glory of children is their fathers [who live godly lives]. Proverbs 17:6 AMP

Take responsibility for your family

  • Noah: By faith [with confidence in God and His word] Noah, being warned by God about events not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his family. Hebrews 11:7 AMP
  • Joshua: But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15 NKJV
  • Elders[These elders should be] men who are of unquestionable integrity and are irreproachable, the husband of [but] one wife, whose children are
[well trained and are] believers, not open to the accusation of being
loose in morals and conduct or unruly and disorderly.
    Titus 1:6 AMPC

Power of a Father's Blessing

  • Isaac blesses Jacob: May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, so that you may become a [great] company of peoples. Genesis 28:3 AMP
  • What Jacob became: I am unworthy of all the favor and of all the faithfulness, which You have shown to Your servant; for with only my staff I crossed this Jordan, and now I have become two companies. Genesis 32:10 NASB

Cautions

  • Why do you kick at My sacrifice and My offering which I have commanded in My dwelling place, and honor your sons more than Me, to make yourselves fat with the best of all the offerings of Israel My people?’ 1 Samuel 2:29 NKJV
  • Now I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the sinful behavior which he knew [was happening], because his sons were bringing a curse on themselves [dishonoring and blaspheming God] and he did not rebuke them1 Samuel 3:13 AMP
  • Your sons shall be wanderers and shepherds in the wilderness for forty years, and they will suffer for your unfaithfulness (spiritual infidelity), until your corpses are consumed in the wilderness. Numbers 14:33 AMP
