Key Verses

Why?

1. Baptism follows believing

  • this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also–not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ 1 Peter 3:21 NIV

When?

As soon as possible after repenting of sins/accepting Christ as Lord and Saviour.

  • Now, why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins by calling on His name [for salvation].’ Acts 22:16 AMP

Examples

  • Respondents to Peter’s message: So then, those who accepted his message were baptized; and on that day about 3,000 souls were added [to the body of believers]. Acts 2:41 AMP
  • Ethiopian enuch: And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” Acts 8:36 ESV
  • Jailer and family: At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds. And without delay, he and all his household were baptized. Then he brought them into his home and set a meal before them. So he and all his household rejoiced that they had come to believe in God. Acts 16:33-34 BSB
  • Paul: At that instant, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and his sight was restored. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. And he spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. Acts 9:18-19 BSB
Respondents to Peter’s message – same day
Ethiopian enuch – as soon as he came across some water
Jailer and family – before giving the disciples any food
Paul – before eating any food (after fasting for 3 days)

All who repented/believed got baptised

Examples:

  • Paul: immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized Acts 9:18 ESV
  • Jailor and family: At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds. And without delay, he and all his household were baptized. Acts 16:33 BSB
  • Cornelius, his relatives and close friends: he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Acts 10:48 ESV
