Key Verses

  • “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Acts 2:38a NIV
  • Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved Mark 16:16 NIV

Why?

1. Baptism follows believing

2. Baptism follows repenting

3. As the pledge of a clear conscience toward God

  • this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also–not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge of a clear conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ 1 Peter 3:21 NIV

When?

As soon as possible after repenting of sins/accepting Christ as Lord and Saviour. See examples below

  • Ethiopian enuch – as soon as he came across some water: And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?” Acts 8:36 ESV
  • Jailer and family – before giving the disciples any food: At that hour of the night, the jailer took them and washed their wounds. And without delay, he and all his household were baptized. Then he brought them into his home and set a meal before them. So he and all his household rejoiced that they had come to believe in God. Acts 16:33-34 BSB
  • Paul – before eating any food (after fasting for 3 days): At that instant, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and his sight was restored. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. And he spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. Acts 9:18-19 BSB

All who repented/believed got baptised

Examples:

  • Paul: immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he rose and was baptized Acts 9:18 ESV
