Key Verse

  • Therefore leaving the elementary teaching about the Christ, let us press on to maturity, not laying again a foundation of repentance from dead works and of faith toward God, of instruction about washings and laying on of hands, and about the resurrection of the dead and eternal judgment. Hebrews 6:1-2 NASB

Purpose

1. Ordination

  • Do not hurry to lay hands on anyone [ordaining and approving someone for ministry or an office in the church, or in reinstating expelled offenders], and thereby share in the sins of others; keep yourself free from sin. 1 Timothy 5:22 AMP

Other versions

  • Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, nor take part in the sins of others; keep yourself pure. 1 Timothy 5:22 ESV
See example

  • Moses did as the LORD had commanded him. He took Joshua, had him stand before Eleazar the priest and the whole congregation,
and laid his hands on him and commissioned him, as the LORD had instructed through Moses. Numbers 27:22&23 BSB

2. Healing

  • These signs will accompany those who have believed: in My name they will cast out demons, they will speak in new tongues; they
will pick up serpents, and if they drink anything deadly, it will not
hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will get well.” Mark 16:17-18 AMP

  • And He touched her hand, and the fever left her; and she got up and waited on Him. Matthew 8:15 NASB
  • Once again Jesus placed His hands on the man’s eyes, and when he opened them his sight was restored, and he could see everything clearly. Mark 8:25 BSB
  • So He could not perform any miracles there, except to lay His hands on a few of the sick and heal them. Mark 6:5 BSB
  • When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. Luke 4:40 NKJV
Note – healing was immediate wherever specified and in others implied.

3. Holy Spirit

  • Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Acts 9:17 NASB
  • And when Paul had laid hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. Acts 19:6 NASB

4. Wisdom

  • And the LORD said to Moses: “Take Joshua the son of Nun with you, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him Numbers 27:18 NKJV
  • Now Joshua the son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom, because Moses had laid his hands on him; and the sons of Israel listened to him and did as the LORD had commanded Moses. Deuteronomy 34:9 NASB
Joshua already had the Holy Spirit. When Moses laid lands on him, he was filled with the spirit of wisdom.
